Lanercost to Carlisle 22 km or so

My prayers for no mud went unanswered, as today we sloshed, squelched and slipped through miles of mud.It was especially bad around gates and in the fields, added with the piles of cow poo, not a lot of joy. I can't comment on the scenery as I was too busy watching where I was walking. Again a lot of sheep, cows and the odd chicken or three, a Shetland pony and horses.
On part of a road walk, the road was covered in a huge puddle, no, more like a lake, which meant we had to try to get through by skirting around the edges. Nah, that didn't work. Got the shoes and socks saturated. Stopped a bit further up the road in the village to take the shoes and socks off and wring them out! They were still pretty wet so had to walk in wet socks. Very unpleasant. Sister #1 had a spare pair of socks to change into - good planning sis!
The walk continued through fields and paddocks, mud, mud, mud. We got into a Mexican standoff with a herd of cows and a few bulls, luckily the last one decided to let us pass.
The walk wasn't very exciting in terms of much to look at. We crossed over the top of a very busy M6. Loads of trucks and cars.
We eventually made it into Carlisle and located our B&B, Courtfield Guesthouse. While sister#1 & B.I.L #1 went off to find the train station and an ATM I stayed put to check out my soggy toes. A few bruises on the toes and a suspect toenail. Ouch!
Of course our rooms are up multiple flights of stairs. Rarely have we ever been on a ground floor! We went to the closest pub for a drink or three and a meal.
An early night to rest up weary feet. Tomorrow is our last day of walking Hadrian's Wall, but we will have a look around Carlisle first. It seems like a busy place.
My only picture today - a fast flowing stream.
